Dental crown treatments allow dentists to restore a tooth to its original size and function after it has been severely weakened due to an injury, decay, or a dental procedure like a root canal. Modern dental crowns are designed to look just like natural teeth, meaning that they can be virtually invisible to casual observers. Here’s how dental crowns work and what you can expect to happen when having one placed.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap designed to be cemented to a compromised tooth in order to recreate its original structure. This enables a tooth to chew after severe injury while also protecting it from infection and further damage. Dental crowns can help spare a patient a tooth extraction while also restoring the appearance of their smile.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Dental crowns are typically placed over the course of two appointments. During the first appointment, your dentist will examine your mouth and the tooth being treated. Using local anesthesia, they will remove some of the tooth’s mass to eliminate infections and make room for the crown. They will fill in any cavities or gaps within the structure with a special dental material. After the tooth is smoothed down, the dentist will take bite impressions and cement a temporary crown upon the tooth. You will then depart from the office while your crown is manufactured at a lab.

The next appointment happens about two weeks later. Your dentist will remove your temporary crown and cement your permanent one in place. They will make any necessary adjustments before the end of the appointment. You may experience some sensitivity in the treated tooth for a few days afterward but call your dentist if you experience any lasting pain. Any normal discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, and you should take care to avoid using the tooth for anything until it feels comfortable to do so.

With proper care, a dental crown can last for up to fifteen years. Consulting with your dentist can determine if dental crown treatments are right for you.
