But believe it or not, oral cancer is actually among the most preventable types of cancer; especially if you know what to look for and what measures to take. It is often categorized into five stages, based on its size and severity using the roman numbers 0 \u2013 IV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its prominence, researchers aren\u2019t quite sure what specifically causes oral cancer; however, they have successfully linked it with several different things including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking and using tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive alcohol consumption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HPV (Human Papillomavirus).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sun or radiation exposure to the face.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetic syndromes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor nutrition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakened immune system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other types of head or neck cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Symptoms and Warning Signs to Watch For<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It goes without saying that you should be keeping a close eye on your oral health at all times, especially if you\u2019re concerned about mitigating oral cancer. Some of these symptoms, including a sore throat or earache, might indicate other conditions\u2014but if you notice any of these symptoms, especially if they\u2019re persistent or combined with other indicators, don\u2019t hesitate to contact your dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Swelling, stiffness, and\/or soreness in your neck and throat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lumps in your cheeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red or white sores on your gums, tonsils, or mouth tissue that don\u2019t heal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty when speaking, biting, chewing, swallowing, or moving your jaw and tongue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loose teeth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A recurring earache.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constant bad breath.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of Early Detection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral cancer is quite preventable, but it depends on your willingness to stay diligent and make wise lifestyle choices. Quitting smoking, sticking to a healthy diet, and protecting your mouth from certain things all play an integral role in preventing oral cancer\u2014but one of the best things you can do is visit your dentist for preventive care, ideally every six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During these visits, your dentist can perform a health screening and investigate your mouth for signs of oral cancer. They\u2019ll use any combination of X-rays, scans, biopsies, and more to thoroughly search for any signs of the disease. Since the five stages of oral cancer increase in severity, catching the disease in its early stages greatly increases the patient&#8217;s chances of survival!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re concerned about oral cancer and think you might be at risk, don\u2019t hesitate to visit your dentist for a screening.
