Certainly, such habits play a vital role in fighting the formation of dental decay. But what else can you do? Research suggests that a few simple additions to your diet might protect your teeth. Let’s talk about some things you can consume that may lower your risk of developing cavities.

Tea

Some people hesitate to drink tea because its darker varieties may stain teeth. That is true, but you should not overlook the potential oral health benefits of consuming this beverage. Numerous studies indicate that green tea can interfere with harmful bacteria in the mouth and thereby play a role in preventing cavity formation. Black tea may also be beneficial. One study found that black tea can prevent the bacteria in plaque from producing acid.

To benefit fully from tea, you should drink it without sugar.

Coffee

Coffee is often vilified because it is acidic and, just like tea, can stain teeth. However, it does have potential oral health benefits. A 2009 study found that people who consumed roasted coffee (without additives like milk or sugar) had significantly fewer teeth problems than those in the control group. People who consumed coffee with milk and no sugar had more teeth issues than those who drank coffee, but still fewer than in the control group.

Coffee’s cavity-fighting power comes from its ability to prevent bacteria from clinging to the surfaces of teeth.

Cranberry

Cranberry juice is quite acidic, so if you consume it, you should do so in moderation. Despite its acidity, however, it isn’t all bad for your oral health. Cranberry contains an enzyme that prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. To benefit from the cavity-fighting power of cranberry, you should drink 100% cranberry juice, not a juice cocktail or anything with added sugar in it.

Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms are known for their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. In fact, they contain a special compound called lentinan, which can kill harmful oral bacteria while leaving beneficial bacteria intact. As an added bonus, shiitake mushrooms’ anti-inflammatory properties can help to reduce the risk of gum disease. You can enjoy this food raw, grilled, stir-fried, or prepared in other ways.

Protecting Your Smile

Smart dietary choices, along with thorough oral hygiene, can do much to reduce your risk of cavities. However, if, despite your best efforts, you ever suspect that a bit of decay is developing, you should visit your holistic dentist for restorative care as soon as possible. They can address the issue and get your smile’s health back on track as soon as possible.

Meet the Dentist

Dr. George Keanna is an experienced holistic dentist who is always seeking to expand his knowledge and skillset in order to better serve his patients.
